Common Neck Complaints and What They Mean

One minute, you’re working at your desk. The next, you feel a sharp, sudden stiffness in the side of your neck. You’ve just developed a crick in your neck.

This is a common experience, and most of us have dealt with it at one time or another. Because it’s usually temporary, most people don’t think much of it. However, if the discomfort persists (or keeps recurring), it could be a sign of an underlying neck problem.

The same could be said of neck pain in general, which affects millions of people worldwide. Neck pain can range from mild to debilitating. In many cases, it can impact daily activities and overall quality of life.

The trick to resolving your neck discomfort? Figuring out the underlying cause–and that’s something the team at South Sherbrook Therapy can help with!

One reason neck pain is so prevalent is that several factors can cause it. Depending on the underlying cause, your pain and discomfort manifest in different ways. For example:

Acute Neck Pain

Acute neck pain refers to any neck pain that occurs due to injury. It will resolve when the damage heals.

What Causes Acute Neck Pain?

Chronic Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain refers to any pain that lasts for more than three months, well past the time it would take for an injury to heal. It usually indicates an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed.

What Causes Chronic Neck Pain?

Nerve-Related Neck Pain

If your neck pain or stiffness is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and into your arm, it can indicate a problem with your nerves.

What Causes Nerve-Related Neck Pain?

A herniated disc in your cervical spine can cause nerve-related symptoms if it presses on a nearby nerve root.

At South Sherbrook Therapy, we create personalized care plans based on the underlying cause of your neck discomfort. We might incorporate the following techniques:

Manual Therapy

  • Hands-on techniques such as therapeutic massage and joint mobilizations can relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain.

Exercises

  • Customized exercise programs focus on strengthening neck muscles and enhancing overall neck stability. These programs can include neck stretches, cervical spine mobilizations and manipulations, and resistance training.

Postural Awareness

  • Our PT will assess and correct your posture to alleviate strain on the neck muscles and promote proper alignment no matter what you’re doing throughout the day.

Education and Lifestyle Modifications

  • We educate our patients about proper body mechanics, ergonomic principles, stress management techniques, and self-care strategies to prevent future neck problems and promote long-term neck health.

If you experience persistent or severe neck pain, it’s essential to seek professional guidance and evaluation. Early intervention and comprehensive physiotherapy can significantly improve neck pain, restore function, and enhance overall well-being.
